Meet Bertha- Miles’ two year old, 450 lb purebred Berkshire pig. Miles bought her on the terms that she “may” be pregnant, but this was undetermined- and as such bought her for a price less costly than a definitively pregnant sow.
We were told the gestation period for a pig is “3 months, 3 weeks and 3 days”, so we thought that we may see piggies her by the end of April at the earliest.
And…we were wrong. Minimal signs of pregnancy, no signs of labour, and several hours later, the first squeals were thankfully heard. Though all us Gillespies were out! Thanks to the best co-farmers and friends anyone could ask for (yay Stels!) and a well-timed drop-in from the Meiers, these little piggies were quickly discovered and taken care of.
We’ve had to learn the sad lesson ourselves that demise is common in these little ones, and by the end of the evening- four of the nine born succumbed to death from injuries during birth. But these five are perky, thriving and pretty darn cute.
The fun never stops around here! We are grateful.
